Sixteen, Drunk and Pregnant
Jasmine lived next door to me and sometimes watched my kids when I went out. She was a likeable kid and always seemed to be smiling. She had a boyfriend, was “in love” and her world seemed to be just the way she wanted it. My children liked her so the few times I did go out, I’d ask Jasmine to babysit. Everything was fine for about a year and then Jasmine started behaving more depressed. She seemed sad and distant. Since I’d gotten to know her pretty well, I sat her down and asked what was wrong. Apparently her boyfriend had ended their relationship. She also found out she was pregnant. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the girl. I told her everything would turn out fine.

She was also an alcoholic
About a month later I had Jasmine babysit again and this time she just seemed strange. I couldn’t really say what it was though. I found out later that Jasmine had started drinking. She would drink the alcohol from her parent’s liquor cabinet or friends would buy her some. I talked to her about it but she said she didn’t drink that often and everything was ok. Things weren’t okay though, she began to drink more and more and she would miss doctor’s appointments (usually when she was drunk). I gathered up my nerve and went to talk to her mother. To my relief, she did not get angry that I was concerned about Jasmine and the baby. Her mother felt helpless, even though Jasmine was a teenager. We talked and I suggested alcohol rehab. Her Mother was all for it; now to convince Jasmine.
Oddly enough, Jasmine agreed to rehab after only a few coaxing sessions by her mother and I. We finally got through to her that she could be killing her baby, and herself. She went to an inpatient rehab and had a few rough spots but all in all she did wonderfully. While in rehab, she decided she was going to give her baby up for adoption. She said that she had a lot of growing up to do before she became a Mother. Well, Jasmine graduated from rehab and stayed away from alcohol. When her precious little girl was born, Jasmine had found a loving family for her. Jasmine is one of the lucky ones. Maybe not all lucky, she had a lot of determination too, but she did it and turned her life back around in time.
