The Day I Got My Big Brother Back

January 21st, 2010

Drug Addiction Stories The Day I Got My Big Brother BackI was helping at the Food Mission that day when I heard my name called. I looked up and there he was: my older brother. That would be, that should be a good thing but my brother had been on drugs for as long as I could remember. It had cost him everything, his wife, his children, his way of life. He and our dad had fought over it for years before our dad passed away.

I hugged him. I could see by the look in his eyes that he was on something even as we spoke. He went around to everyone and said “That’s my sister, that’s my baby sister.” I excused myself after a bit and went into the office and called our mother. I told her that Scotty was at the Food Mission.

“Can I give him our phone number, Mama?” I asked. She hesitated, wanting to say no because of all the times he had stolen from us over the years. Finally, she said “Of course, he’s family.”

I went back out to the room where we were giving the food and Scotty came up to me. He was jabbering a mile a minute and I could not really understand him. Our Outreach Counselor saw us and came up, asking if there was anything he could do. He could tell Scotty was obviously on something, too. When people came through who were high or drunk, he would try to get them to get help so they did not hurt themselves or anyone else, especially if they were driving.

Scotty again said “This is my baby sister” and stumbled. I said “Scotty, what are you on this time?” He insisted he was fine but there was really no doubt. Then he stumbled again. We got him into a private conference room and I kneeled down next to him. I begged him to get help. “Scotty, you have been on drugs for as long as I can remember. Please get help. I want to know what it is like to have a real big brother. I need you. Mama is sick and I need you.”

Scotty looked into my eyes without blinking. I was praying inside and tears were running down my face. Then he did an amazing thing. He looked at the Outreach Counselor and asked him if he could really get help today. Within an hour my brother was checking into a residential program in our town. I was put down as his next of kin and I visited him during family visitation times and went to the available family therapy sessions.

That was two years ago. Today, Scotty is rebuilding his relationship with his own two children and he volunteers at the same Food Mission I do. We have gotten closer and for the first time in my life, I know what it is like to have a big brother. It’s awesome.

Inspirational Drug Rehab Video

June 2nd, 2009

Narconon Trois-Rivières has just recently released a new drug rehab video depicting a clip from the remarkable drug education lecture given by Narconon founder, William Benitez in 1968. The video is also giving a dedication to a Narconon program graduate, who conquered his own demons while attending the program. The video gives a real life depiction about how attending a drug rehab program can and will raise an individuals abilities to help them overcome the devastation of a drug addiction. Mr. Benitez, in his recorded lecture, showed that it is possible to beat addiction. Once a former heroin addict of 19 years, he founded the first Narconon therapy group within the Arizona State Prison, which not only saved his life, but the lives of fellow inmates.

Like most drug addictions, there are many barriers to overcome to achieve complete sobriety. Many people entering a drug rehab program today are sometimes amazed at their achievements made while being sober from drugs or alcohol. When these graduates see their own abilities increasing, and they start rediscovering what life is all about, they convince themselves that lifelong sobriety is possible. William Benitez proved that to himself when he decided to start that first therapy group, and in the clip shown in this drug rehab video, he tells the audience how Narconon works. He says: “So all of this constantly is bringing the ability of the person out. A person will say, how can I learn to look? How can I know who I am and what life is about? If there is a problem, how can I locate it without having to go to a counselor? How can I solve all of my problems? Alright, that is the way that Narconon works.”

As seen in this inspiring video, a Narconon program graduate accepts a certificate for overcoming a life long addiction and creating a new life for himself. Narconon Trois-Rivieres wants to give a message of hope to anybody battling drug addiction, that it is possible to solve their problems, which are facing them. William Benitez faced many problems in his life, having been a former addict and convicted felon; however, he made a decision to not be a victim any longer. Narconon Trois-Riveires wants to dedicate this drug rehab video to all of the people who have beat drug addiction. We only hope, no matter where they are, and what treatment they have received; they are continuing to pass along a message of hope, that sobriety is possible.

Help can be defined as to give aid, be of service, provide support, to relieve, and to prevent. When a loved ones addiction is first discovered, most of everybody that does know the person do have some willingness to help. One major problem that does occur is the lack of knowledge, or really knowing what to do. Many people will push these considerations aside and move forward making attempt after attempt helping the person. Because of all these unsuccessful attempts, the family and friends will have more discouragement and further hopelessness.

Failure can be defined as starting something and being unsuccessful or having lack of success. For example, a father is attempting to help his son, who is addicted to drugs. He lectures the son, scares him, and makes him promise to never use drugs again. The father later finds out the son was seen downtown getting high again. The father now feels a sense of failure, and is once again in unknown of what to do. He might make further attempts; yet, will continue to see failure, and will feel a continued hopelessness, all due to one simple aspect. The first step of actually helping someone is, understanding what the actual problem is. If you do not fully understand something, it will be difficult to solve any problems related to it. In this case, it is getting a full understanding of drug addiction. Once a person can understand drug addiction, they can and will help the person.
