A Child Who Wasn’t But Now Is

November 5th, 2009

The night my cousin’s neighbor came over to his house, I realized what a crack cocaine addict really was. It was just a regular every day person much like you and me.  At first I really did not realize what was going on.  I thought she Drug Addiction Stories A Child Who Wasnt But Now Iswas a gullible person who seemed very naïve as my cousin started teasing her about this and that.  When he left the room to go fix us all some coffee, she turned to me and told me the most heart-wrenching story.

She said she came from a very rich family. She told me her little one had cancer and was very sick and her family would not help her out and she could not get to her trust fund.  Now, a child with cancer touched heavily on my heart because one of my own children had been touched by it and was recovering from lymphoma.

My cousin’s neighbor (her name is Hannah)  told me she needed money desperately or her child would die.  It broke my heart and as I began to write her a check my cousin came back in the room.  He stopped me and sent her on her way.  I was angry with him but he told me she was making it up, that she did not even have a child.

I spent the entire night thinking about it.  I could have been angry, especially given the fact that my own child really had been sick.  But something touched me and the next day I went over and spoke to her.  She was sober and it was obviously bothering her as she seemed jittery and desperate for a fix.  I sat down with her and told her what she had said to me the night before and about my own son’s true life cancer experience.

She began crying and apologizing.  She said that when she was high or desperate for a fix she was not the same person she was normally.  This much I had already figured out.  I told her she could make it up to me and to herself if she would get help.

That was three years ago.  Today, Hannah is a young woman who still lives next door to my cousin and now have a full time job.  She works in the flower shop down the street.  She is quite talented when it comes to floral arrangements.  Hannah is now the very real mother of a one year old baby boy.  Every year on his birthday? She sends ME flowers.  She told me once that she believes it was because I entered her life that she was able to get help.  I do not know about that.  I only know that there is a very wonderful and special little boy now living next door to my cousin…and that I love the smell of the yellow roses I get every year on his birthday.
