How to Help a Drug Addict

September 16th, 2009

My stepbrother is a drug addict.  We have watched him spiral down for years.  For the sake of him and our parents, I spoke with a specialist and learned about interventions.  I talked to our parents and siblings as well as a few close friends, and we decided to have an intervention for him

Drug Addiction Stories How to Help a Drug AddictWhile researching ways to help him, I learned some ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ in regards to drug addicts.  Do not give an addict money, as it will go straight to drugs.  Do not argue with an addict when he or she is high.  There are also several to follow when planning an intervention.

I did the right thing going to a medical specialist regarding my stepbrother.  He helped us plan a thorough intervention and told us to show the drug addict how much we love him.  Do not put the addict down or belittle him.  We also had to stay solid as a unit and not wimp out during the intervention.

Before the intervention, the specialist asked us several questions to make sure my stepbrother is a drug addict.  He also coached us in things that could come up during the intervention and what to say and not to say.  My parents were so grateful for his wisdom and patience that we decided to put my stepbrother in his drug addiction rehab facility after the intervention.

We were nervous before the intervention.  We even practiced what we would say to my stepbrother.  We had several friends and family members on hand and a treatment plan already in place for when he saw we were only looking out for him and his best interests.

When you are looking to help a drug addict, first make sure the person is indeed an addict.  Let this person know you care for him or her.  If he says he is hungry, take him to dinner or cook him a meal, but do not lend him money, as it will almost certainly go towards his habit.  Plan an intervention.  As you could see in the words above, an intervention can be monumental in helping your loved one realize he or she needs help.

The intervention we had for my stepbrother was a success that day.  As already arranged with the rehab clinic, we got him into their care immediately after the family met with him that day.  I believe it was as successful as it was because we listened to the specialist and did it as he recommended.  If you are wondering how to help a drug addict, I suggest you meet with a specialist and follow their advice.  It certainly worked for our family.
