Crime and Addiction

July 28th, 2009

It’s amazing when you realize that some of the people you see now who are disheveled and in and out of prison systems were once straight “A” students.  They were once on the fast track up the corporate ladder.  They were once the apples of society’s eye until they got involved with drugs.  It is not a story book drama, but real life.  Drug addiction leads people to crime.  It may start out that they begin to steal to keep up their drug habit but often it becomes even more than that.  Women sell their bodies for a small amount of their drug of choice.  People prostitute their own children to get drugs.  There are times when even murder is a crime committed because of an addiction.

Drug addicts lose all sense of their priorities, values and morals.

Drug addicts lose all sense of their priorities, values and morals.

Drug addictions envelop the entire being of the addict.  They lose all sense of their priorities, values and morals.  All that is important is the drug and getting high.  Every moral fiber that a person once had can be destroyed with an addiction.  This is why it tears apart not only families, but societies.  For people who have never had an addiction, it may be difficult to visualize but it is very real.  Getting that high becomes the most important thing in the world.  The drug destroys every shred of decency that may have been a part of the person before the addiction.  The addiction removes the shame, it removes the conscience, it destroys every value they have ever had.

There are people in jails and prisons now for everything from theft to murder all because of an addiction to a drug.  It is said that over 50% of the prison population is incarcerated directly or indirectly because of drugs.  It can get very heinous.  One instance was reported where a mother prostituted her 3 year old daughter just to get money for her drugs.  Her “high” was more important to her than the safety and well being of her 3 year old daughter.  That is what drugs do and they can do it to even the best of people.

No one takes that first “hit” with the intention of becoming a drug addict, let alone a criminal and yet it happens.  It happens every day to thousands of people.  Some women have been known who not only have prostituted their children but sold their newborns just to get that all important drug.  It’s cruel, it’s ugly and it’s hideous, but it is all too real; Drug addicts become criminals.
