Class Valedictorian’s Death Rocks Small Southern Community – Part 1

November 25th, 2009

This morning should have been the happiest day of Samantha’s life.  She was a popular cheerleader, was valedictorian of her class and had been accepted by two of the top Ivy League colleges in the country.   Instead of spending time at the stylist getting the perfect hair style and practicing her speech, she was lying in a casket at the local cemetery while her parents, family, and friends prepared for her funeral.

Drug Addiction Stories Class Valedictorian’s Death Rocks Small Southern Community Part 1The shock of Samantha’s death rocked the very core of the small coastal town in the Deep South.  No one could possibly comprehend that this girl, who was so full of potential and life, was now dead.   Samantha was one of those people who everyone loved and adored.  She was president of her senior class and had a large group of friends.  She’s always been a leader and had a bright future in front of her, which makes it all the more difficult for anyone to understand the choices she made just two days before.

Samantha had recently started dating a boy that she’d met one Friday night after a football game against a rival school.  He seemed like a great guy and her family was more than happy to see her start dating again after a nasty break up with her long-time boyfriend Jonathan.   Her girlfriends couldn’t help but feel a little resentment, because Tobias seemed to be monopolizing her time and Samantha rarely had time for them anymore.  She was always rushing off to this party or that party, all with Tobias and his friends.

Two nights ago, she had been extremely excited about the graduation party that Tobias and his friends were throwing in her honor.   She couldn’t believe that Tobias would go to such lengths to give her a party, but his parents were out of town and he was inviting everyone over for a BBQ and pool party.   When Samantha’s friends called her mother to tell them about the party, she dismissed it as jealousy because they weren’t invited, and didn’t worry because she trusted her daughter and knew she’d never jeopardize her future.

According to police, sometime that evening, one of Tobias’ friends arrived with Crystal Meth and they all began smoking it.  Samantha had never tried drugs of any type, but according to one of the witnesses, after saying no several times, she finally caved when Tobias made a comment about her embarrassing him for being so lame.   About a half hour later, she was seen smoking Crystal Meth yet again, and according to reports, around five minutes later someone yelled that there was someone floating in the pool.

She Still Doesn’t Remember the Party

November 16th, 2009

She still doesn’t remember the party to this day.  All my sister remembers is that she experienced crystal meth for the first time that night and a feeling like she was on top of the world and could do anything.  She felt aroused and beautiful and charismatic.  She is beautiful but now she seems almost like a shadow of her former self.

Drug Addiction Stories She Still Doesnt Remember the PartyMy sister was a rarity in high school.  She was sweet and special and gorgeous and nice.  She was popular because she was so unique.  If she had a bad quality it was that she trusted too easily.  So when her new college roommate talked her into going to a party off campus, she went.  When she saw some people there that just did not seem like college students, she was right.  She should have trusted her instincts.  She was nervous.  She didn’t know where she was, though.

Her roommate tried to get her to loosen up.  Finally, the roommate promised they could leave if my sister would just try the crystal meth one time.  That is the last thing my sister remembers about that night.  The next thing she knew, she was waking up in a hospital bed.  Her roommate and several others were also in the hospital and one other person had died from the crystal meth.

The nightmares began haunting my sister.  She knew she had sexual intercourse that night from what the doctor had said but she honestly did not know if she was raped or willing.  There were times when she felt someone was suffocating her so just a few weeks after being released, she bought some crystal meth from someone who had been rumored to be a dealer back in high school.  She just wanted to forget.

She began losing weight and our parents were not fooled.  We held an intervention one afternoon and she finally broke down and confessed that she was using crystal meth.  We got her into a residential program. One night she turned to me and asked if she could just tell me everything once and for all.  I listened as my little sister told me of the nightmares she had been having, of the things she would do in order to get a fix and how ashamed she was.

I had just finished college myself and had been offered a position in a city about 200 miles from home.  With our parents’ support, my sister moved with me so she could start a new life.  We got her involved with a center that was part of the same group she had resided in back home and then she began taking some classes at the community college.

My sister went to hell and back during the time she was on crystal meth.  Seeing her today, I am able to recognize her old self coming through.  She has gained a little weight, she is smiling again and she is helping people who are where she has been.  There’s a look of maturity and wisdom where the innocent sparkle once was.  I’m just grateful to have her back.

She still doesn’t remember the party that night.  I am kind of grateful for that myself.

Back From the Grave – Part 1

September 22nd, 2009

You know, I always assumed that drug addiction meant an addiction to one drug. I learned the hard way that it isn’t always true. Roy was a sweet, albeit “hillbilly” looking man that I dated for a couple of year’s way back when. Roy was sweet, but believe me, I saw the rough side of him too. He was a bodyguard and was always armed. If he believed for a second that anyone would hurt the woman he was protecting, he could be very mean. There was always a crowd of people at the house. There was always a party going on and I admit, I was part of it. The woman Roy protected was a drug dealer. We called her “Ma” and a small group of us always got to party for free. When “the family” was alone in the house, everyone pretty much got whatever drug they wanted. While I preferred to stay with the marijuana and occasionally cocaine, Roy was doing the hard stuff. After a while, I noticed he was not only doing A drug, but several, and drinking.

Drug Addiction Stories Back From the Grave Part 1

He never got mean toward me but he did start getting meaner to other people.

Roy was doing acid, cocaine, marijuana and drinking; and that was on the nights he was hitting light. He never got mean toward me but he did start getting meaner to other people. He even started getting dangerous. He would draw that gun on way too many occasions and sometimes with a house full of people. When the group would go out, more than likely, Roy would get into a fight or two. Of course, everyone in the group was at least three sheets to the wind, so we thought it was funny.

When I met Roy, he had a healthy appetite. As time went on, he barely ate. His eyes became sunken and had dark circles. He began to experience some serious medical issues too but wouldn’t do anything about them. This sweet, good-looking man who always called me his wife was becoming a shell of a person and very different from the man I started dating. Well, I was caught up in it too. I did my share of smoking and snorting and did nothing as Roy would down one drug after another. For two years it went on like this. Then Ma started getting in even more types of drugs. The parties continued.
