Narconon looks at how OxyContin Addiction is being Prevented

May 4th, 2011

OxyContin Addiction prevention and risk reduction methods are not being used by most doctors when prescribing OxyContin to their patients, a recent study confirms.

.

Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the Montefiore Medical Centre looked at around 1,600 long term prescription Oxy users to discover the extent to which their doctors were using addiction prevention measures.

The Three methods used to assess potential addiction are:

  • Drug Addiction Stories Narconon looks at how OxyContin Addiction is being Preventedurine tests
  • regular patient interviews
  • monitoring requests for early refills

The results of the survey showed that only 8% of the patients were urine tested, more than a quarter were having multiple early refills, and that less than half of the patients were having regular meetings with their doctor to check on possible signs and symptoms of addiction to this prescription opioid narcotic.

.

Who Is Responsible?

While experts all agree that there is a problem, many people see it as a case of addicted patients deliberately misleading their doctors about important issues relevant to their addiction. The general conception is that the busy, well meaning doctors is over prescribing and mis prescribing this addictive drug because they lack of adequate training in the field of pain management and addiction. The truth of the situation is that narcotics are addictive and that no one is immune to addiction as a side effect when taking these drugs, whether acquired by way of prescription or illicitly.

It is unfortunate that the view is taken to permit doctors to continue to prescribe addictive medications without an understanding of what it is that they are doing. It is unlikely that we would permit engineers to construct bridges not designed for intended traffic, or builders to build houses that will most probably fall down, accept the excuse that they have insufficient skill in that specific area, and then allow them to go on building.

OxyContin for Children?

As if the current situation is not bad enough, it is reported that the intrepid directors of Purdue Pharma are presently trialing a new OxyContin product – intended for chronic pain relief in children as young as 6 years old. Will we start to see OxyContin addicts as young as 6 or 7, and who will be held responsible if toxic side effects impede the growth and development of a child?

True Prevention

Narconon Trois-Rivières is an established alcohol and drug addiction recovery center with a proven record of success in the field of narcotics detoxification and rehabilitation. Narconon uses drug-free methods to achieve full addiction recovery. This organization has for many years distributed addiction prevention materials and conducted narcotics abuse prevention conferences to educate and inform young people of the hazards and risks involved in drug abuse.

Narconon maintains its commitment to addiction prevention with school aged children and teenagers, and continues to promote a “say no to drugs” approach to life. Drugs have a stranglehold on society today that would appear to be out of control. Drug use pervades our communities and claims the lives of young people, a tragedy easily avoidable if children from an early age could be presented with the facts about the use of toxic drugs and their addictive side effects.

No one fit and healthy wants to curtail their life and their freedom by using addictive drugs. Drug use is not a healthy or natural method of achieving pain relief. All drugs are inherently toxic and addictive. Effective addiction prevention means saying no to drugs.

You Just Wanted the Pain to Go Away and got addicted to the Oxycodone painkillers

April 16th, 2011

Within the last few years, Narconon drug rehab centers have seen a steep increase of clients coming in for treatment who are addicted to Oxycodone painkillers. There is a reason for this.

Many people have gone to a doctor for the relief of pain and have been given oxycodone, an analgesic painkiller, similar to morphine. Until recently there has not been much coverage in the news about this drug side effects that include addiction, even when using it in accordance with a prescription. Therefore people taking oxy, getting good feelings and pain relief don’t think in terms of addiction, simply think that the prescribed drug appears to be doing its job.

The Beginning of an Addiction

Drug Addiction Stories You Just Wanted the Pain to Go Away and got addicted to the Oxycodone painkillersPeople taking oxy products for their pain will generally start with the lower doses in the range, and due to tolerance effects that happen with addictive drugs, may find that after a while they need a higher dose, or to take their medication more frequently to keep the pain away. Doctors, at least until recently, would normally oblige – pain is now recognized as being one of the vital signs that a doctor must take into account and medicate if it presents as a problem.

People would often find that after taking oxy they would feel on top of the world, only to start feeling moody, upset or anxious as the dose wears off. This side effect of oxycodone use has caused for some people a psychological addiction to the drug, as well as a physical tolerance that causes painful symptoms to occur if a person reduces their dose or tries to withdraw from it completely. I Really Thought I had it Under Control – Part 2

April 7th, 2011

Go to part 1 of the story

Drug Addiction Stories I Really Thought I had it Under Control Part 2Even though I had taken 2 Oxycontin pills when I left the pharmacy, I took 2 more when I got home. It felt so good, and so right. I began to act like Oxy was going to disappear from the earth. I started taking 4 pills at a time, thinking I wouldn’t be able to get more when the prescription had run out. Then, I figured out they lasted longer if I chewed them instead of swallowing them. Well, they did for a while anyway.

My boyfriend, Jake and I started arguing a lot more because he didn’t like me taking the Oxycontin. The more we argued, the more Oxy I took. The more Oxy I took, the more we argued. It became a vicious cycle. One day, after I got home from yet another doctor and getting more OxyContin, my boyfriend took the pill bottle. I was so mad, and tried to take the bottle away from him, but he wouldn’t let go. I kicked him in the leg and told him to give me my damn medicine. “Medicine”, he scoffed. “Your drug of choice is more like it.” Well, I got rid of him. I threw him out.

There was a guy that I would always see at the drug store when I went to get my prescriptions, and he liked OxyContin too. We started seeing each other. He knew other ways of getting Oxy, but knew a lot of doctors that would hand them out easily too. It’s funny that I had gotten so into Oxy after I really thought I had it under control. Mark (my new boyfriend) showed me how to snort the crushed pills too.

I saw Jake, my former boyfriend one day while shopping. He hugged me, but then shook his head. Behind me was a mirror, and he turned me around to face the mirror. “Who ARE you?” he said softly. I was shocked at what I saw. Was this me? I had dark circles under my eyes, my complexion was terrible…I looked ragged. I forced a slight chuckle and made an excuse to get out of there.

At home, I told Mark what happened. He laughed, handed me a couple of Oxy and said, “Here, this will help.” It did, of course, for a while. I just couldn’t get that image I saw in the mirror out of my head. I called Jake that night and asked him to help me. That is how I ended up here, in rehab and recalling my story. Yep, I thought I had it under control.
